GPA is a descriptive statistic

We evaluate the academic performance of high school and college students by means of a grade point average or GPA.

That makes it a nice descriptive statistic, It's easy to calculate, it's easy to understand, and it's easy to compare across students.

But it's not perfect. The GPA does not reflect the difficulty of the course that different students may have taken. How can we compare a student with a 3.4 GPA is classes that appear to be relatively nonchallenging and a student with 2.9 GPA who has taken calculus, physics, and other tough subjects?

For a student taking a lot of honors such as gym or health education, would actually pull my GPA down, even though it is impossible to do better than an A in those classes.

Descriptive statistics exist to simplify, which always implies some loss or detail. Anyone working with numbers needs to recognize as much.

หลายๆคนน่าจะรู้จักกันดี กับเครื่องมือทางสถิติอย่างพวก ร้อนละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ค่ากลาง ค่าความแปรปรวน ต่างๆ เครื่องมือเหล่านี้ล้วนเป็นเครื่องมือที่อยู่ในกลุ่ม Descriptive statistic ทั้งสิ้น ซึ่งจะเป็นเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการอธิบายข้อมูลที่อยู่รูปแบบของค่าสถิติหรือตัวเลขยากๆ สรุปให้อยู่ในรูปแบบที่สามารถอธิบายและเข้าใจได้ง่ายขึ้น

ยกตัวอย่างเช่น GPA (Grade Point Average) หรือที่รู้จักกันดีว่า เกรดเฉลี่ย

GPA ก็ถือว่าเป็นค่า Descriptive Statistic เช่นกัน เป็นเครื่องมือที่อธิบายประสิทธิภาพในการเรียนในสาขาที่เรียนอยู่ 

Descriptive Statistic นั้นง่ายต่อความเข้าใจ ง่ายในการคำนวนและง่ายที่จะนำมาเปรียบเทียบกับค่าอื่นๆ ในประเภทเดียวกันแต่ ก็ไม่ใช่ค่าที่ Perfect สักเท่าไร เพราะว่า GPA. ไม่ได้สะท้อนถึงความยากในวิชาที่เรียนไป มันเป็นค่าที่บอกถึงความแตกต่างในตัวผู้เรียนที่ใช้ในการเปรียบเทียบในแต่ละชั้นเรียน ที่เรียนในวิชาเดียวกัน
